It's Never Too Late: Exploring What Permanency Looks Like for Young Adults. (EN)
🗣️Wendy Hayes ▼ Workshop Details
At Never Too Late (NTL), we focus on exploring permanency options for those who have had, or are about to have, their child welfare services terminated (aka "aging out"). This includes facilitating and supporting unconditional, lifelong connections for young people aged 16+. We want to share some of our biggest lessons in community building, meeting the needs of those who have lived through the system, and what it takes to be a "Human". Human is the term Never Too Late (NTL) uses for the role of caregiver/parent. It comes from a Lived Expert of child welfare expressing that, along with financial supports and services, someone who ages out of child welfare wants a human being who is not paid to be there in their lives.
Tools for Relational permanency planning: Ecomap and mobility map (EN)
🗣️Dr Melanie Doucet ▼ Workshop Details
Following Dr. Melanie Doucet’s morning keynote on the importance of relational permanency for children and youth in care (the WHY), this workshop will focus on the implementation of relational permanency planning (the HOW) via concrete tools: the ecomap and mobility map. Participants will be guided in a small group exercise to complete an ecomap, following a case study of a young person in care and their journey in the system and during their transition to adulthood. Participants will also be introduced to the mobility map as a tool to identify areas of interest for a young person in care and points of connection to the supportive people in the community. This workshop will be facilitated in both English and French with presentation slides and handouts provided in both official languages.
